Workers Compensation News Look Out for Drone Surveillance Harris Law

Mar 15, 2019 | Workers Compensation

At this years MAJ Workers’ Compensation / Social Security Seminar, one speaker revealed a rather unnerving piece of information regarding the latest method being used by insurance companies to investigate claims – drone surveillance . Yes, that’s right. Insurance companies have finally taken to using actual drones to fly over people’s homes, and take personal photos without their consent in an effort to disprove workers compensation claims. Worst of all, absolutely anything discovered can be taken out of context and used against you. Fortunately, however, there are some steps you can take to hopefully avoid the less-than-candid cameras that might be after you. Kiss Social Media Goodbye The best thing you can do if you are fighting for your workers compensation benefits is to say goodbye to all social media until everything is resolved. It may seem ridiculous, but insurance companies will often scour your media content in search of even the slightest bit of ammunition to use against you. Even if you’re not doing anything you’re not supposed to, all it takes is for someone to tag you in an old photo that shows you acting outside the restraints of your injury and soon you’ll be defending something that’s not even relevant to your current case. Take It Slow You’re probably anxious to get back to living your life as soon as possible, but make sure you remember to take things slow – especially until your case is closed. After all, the drones may be watching. If you participate in any activities beyond your work restrictions, you might be unfairly judged for being dishonest about your injuries or limitations. Fortify Your Home While you may not have to worry about drones bursting into your home through the windows to try and capture your deceit up close and personal, you should still be weary of leaving your blinds open or working out in your garage with the garage door open. If there really are drones trying to monitor your every move, this will at least help protect you from their prying “eyes” in the privacy of your own home. Cut Off Communication Do not talk about your case, injuries, or any other issues you’re having with any of your neighbors, co-workers, or even friends – no one. Conversations can easily become twisted, so whatever you have to say about your situation should be kept to yourself until everything is all said and done. It’s what’s best for everyone. Additionally, if anyone tries to contact you and inquire about personal information, ignore or block whoever it is. Insurance companies never lack creativity when it comes to inventing new ways to try and keep people away from the money they need/deserve, so you always have to be on your toes no matter what. Thankfully, if you need a little extra help defending your claims, the attorneys at Harris Law are always here for you.
