A personal protection order is often referred to as a PPO and is an order of protection which is put in place by a circuit court. Used to protect you from physical or other forms of harassment, a PPO prohibits the person involved from coming near you or contacting you in any way. If you are granted a personal protection order in Kalkaska MI , the respondent (the person who the protection order is filed against) involved may not:
- Contact you in any way
- Enter your property or your work place
- Assault or wound you
- Harass or stalk you
- Remove any minor children from where you/they live unless their removal is part of court-ordered visitation
- Interfere with your efforts to remove your children or property
- Purchase or possess a firearm
There are two types of personal protection orders and two ways to issue them. The two types of PPO’s include a
domestic personal protection order
and a
nondomestic personal protection order
. Used under different circumstances, a domestic PPO is issued when you have or have had a personal relationship with the person such as ex-spouses or someone whom you have lived, with while the non domestic PPO is issued when you have not had a relationship with the person.
Issued in two ways, a
PPO
is issued after the respondent has been notified of the filing and a hearing has been held or without notification. When a PPO is issued without notifying the respondent, it is called a ex parte order.
