Trampoline Safety Harris Law

Jul 31, 2017 | General News

Backyard trampolines pose a hazard to children and have resulted in numerous accidents and injuries including sprains, broken bones, and head and neck injuries.  In fact, the risk of serious injury is so great, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises against the use of home trampolines. That said, if you do choose to purchase a home trampoline , here are a few important safety tips you should follow that will reduce the risk of injury and create a safer environment for your children to play.

  • Never allow children or pets to play underneath a trampoline while someone is using it.
  • Make sure your trampoline is installed so that it is at least 9 feet from buildings, trees, fences, or poles.
  • Check to make sure all the springs are properly fixed in their position. Springs should be intact and securely attached at both ends to create the proper tension. When springs start to sag or wear out, they should be replaced or fixed.
  • Only purchase a trampoline that comes with safety pads that cover the springs, hooks and frame. Additionally, the color of the pads should be different from the trampoline frame and mat so it’s easy to see the perimeter of the trampoline .
  • When you purchase your trampoline , only choose models with trampoline safety nets or buy a safety net at the same time. Safety nets are vital in preventing children from falling off and hitting the ground.
  • Teach your children to go slow and not attempt to try things they’re not ready for yet. Also ask them to take a break if they’ve become tired.
  • Remove jewelry and anything in their pockets that could cause injury before using a trampoline .
  • Make sure the trampoline is dry before using. Wet mat can be slippery and children are likely to slip and land in a way that could cause injury.
  • The jumping mat should not have any holes. If the mat is worn out, replace it.
  • Avoid installing your trampoline on pavement or other hard ground and instead, install it on energy absorbing ground such as sand, wood chip or grass.
  • Consider enrolling your children in a local trampoline class to learn skills and basic safety rules.
  • Anyone using the trampoline should always use the ladder to climb on and off the trampoline and never try to jump on or off without the ladder. Jumping off a trampoline is a great way to wind up in the emergency room.
  • Install your trampoline on level ground. Trampolines installed on uneven ground cause children to fall off when jumping.
  • Strongly discourage somersaults which can lead to serious of trampoline injuries of the head and neck.
  • Ground safety pads placed around the trampoline can help prevent serious injury if someone does fall off while jumping.
  • During the winter, take your trampoline down and put it away until the weather permits.

Trampoline injuries lead to thousands of emergency room visits each year. Please consider learning the tips and safety rules that can protect your family from an injury that could spoil their summer fun.
