Michigan Drivers Licenses Changes to Comply with Federal Law Harris Law

Aug 31, 2017 | General News

As the world continues its rapid progression toward an unknown future, the need for proper security within all our hometowns and even our country increases daily. Millions of people travel from country to country every day; therefore it’s important for our esteemed community leaders to always be looking ahead for better ways to protect our families and loved ones. In light of our current foreign and domestic traveling capabilities and our history’s unforgiving past, our U.S. Congress has initiated a strategic solution to many security concerns.

Starting October 1, 2020, entrance to federal buildings, including military bases, and the boarding of any domestic flights will require the use of a “REAL ID” compliant Driver’s license . The original purpose of the REAL ID Act is to help safeguard citizens from malicious misuse of their personal identity through the use of more stringent safety protocols regarding identification. Getting this optional REAL ID compliant driver’s license can be a relatively simple process. Either wait until you receive a Michigan driver’s license renewal notice to tell you whether or not you’re already compliant, or visit the Michigan Secretary of State office. You must arrive in person with your authentic birth certificate, as well as any legal documents that support a name change should your legal name and birth name differ from each other.

For those who opt out of receiving a REAL ID compliant driver’s license, there isn’t much that will change. You will receive your standard issue Michigan driver’s license that will say “Not For Federal Identification”, and the use of your valid passport will still be required to board any flight or grant access to any federal building, the way it always has been. If you’re not sure about your current compliance, but you notice you have a Michigan “enhanced” license with an American flag on it no need to worry, you’re already REAL ID compliant. For those of you who can’t wait to get your REAL ID compliant drover’s license and enjoy easier, faster access to places without needing a bulky passport, you don’t need to wait until your renewal notice arrives. REAL ID licenses are available as of August 28, 2017. If you’ve got that golden circle and star in the right hand corner of your Michigan driver’s license, then you’ve got the golden ticket.
